Wellways Reform activities
Victoria's new programs and services
As a result of the recommendations from the Royal Commission, Wellways now works with a range of key partners and the Victorian Government to deliver new programs and services across the state.
This includes:
- Programs that ensure people can access appropriate, local support for people experiencing mental health challenges and their families, carers and supporters.
- Programs to build the future workforce of the mental health system.
- Programs to grow and develop the lived experience workforce and embed these roles across Wellways at every level of service delivery and design.
Peer Cadet Program - Lived Experience workforce
The Peer Cadet program kicked off in 2021 and continues today. It increases the number of entry points into the lived/living experience workforce (LLEW) and provide a supportive and structured environment for learning. It provides opportunity for people with lived/living experience to enter paid employment at Wellways while undertaking Certificate IV Mental Health Peer Work.
Peer Cadets develop knowledge, skills, and confidence in a structured and supported environment. Throughout their employment cadets receive supervision, training, and reflective practice opportunities that are discipline specific.
ALL consumer peer and carer peer cadets from the first 2021-22 intake transitioned into permanent employment at Wellways. It doesn't get better than that!
Mental Health and Wellbeing Local Services
Mental Health and Wellbeing Local Services support the mental health and wellbeing of Victorian communities, providing a convenient access point for support. By 2026 there will be 50 Local Services throughout the state.
Local Services are the front door to mental health and wellbeing support, providing free treatment, care and support for people who are experiencing mental health concerns, including people experiencing mental health and substance use concerns at the same time.
Who are the Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals for?
- Anyone aged 26 years of age or older.
- Anyone experiencing distress, mental health wellbeing or alcohol and other drug concerns.
- Anyone who needs more support than they can get from their usual doctor but do not need hospital services.
“Providing community-led, community-delivered mental health support through a holistic and individual approach is central to our [Wellways] identity and purpose.” Laura Collister (2023).
